These paintings were among the many I completed during my school years & which were either sold or given away as gifts.

I owe a huge debt to my longsuffering art master Dick Lilley R.A. He taught me how to look for the way light falls on a subject. He was relentless in encouraging me to paint what I saw, the way I saw it & most importantly the way I emotionally attached to the subject, so that I should paint what I felt about the subject & not just to copy its appearance.

He was as liberal with his time as he was his material & had I heeded ALL his advice I should not have stopped painting these past 26 years. As so often before, he was right , I was wrong. What you see here are images & experiments inspired by Dick Lilley.

Manet, Modigliani, Sickert, Bomberg, Auerbach, Lilley & then there is Peter Vincent. A longstanding friend of my parents & highly accomplished artist & designer. He visited my studio when I was about 12 & spent hours helping tutor me in rendering shadow. He showed me how to seek & capture the negative space of an elliptical vessel, a twig or a limb. It was a lesson I have never forgotten & I hope I'm still learning from 40 or more years on.
