After
five decades of effort & experiment, I am not convinced
that it is possible to be a touchy-feely adult, employed,
fatherly heterosexual bloke, ( call me 'metrosexual' man
if you must ), & still satisfy all the roles expected
of men today. The high achieving breadwinner, the ever
present & active lover, considerate partner, caring
parent cannot surely be concurrent activities ! Multi
tasking I am capable of, I can do the washing, the ironing
& cook a meal for 9 whilst considering which GCSE
options one of my children should be taking, but being
all things to all people, at all times, I am not.
I have had the good fortune to be an adolescent lover,
husband for more than 20 years, single parent to four
children, fiancée & most recently lived with
my lover. I am father to one daughter & three sons,
stepfather to three more girls & two boys. What these
roles & experiences have taught me is the value of
true masculinity. I celebrate the masculine attributes
of stoicism, strength of character, assertiveness, decisiveness,
confidence, courage to put others first & the courtesy
to put others needs before self-interest.
Which is possibly why I do not think it is necessarily
wrong for a man to celebrate the beauty of a woman's features.
I cannot, not look at that fetching female ankle on the
train, that trim figure behind the counter or that wonderful
view behind a female cyclist ! without wanting to rejoice
in the spectacular variety that is womanhood!
The bath, the shower & a woman's body, what image
could be more alluring, more innocent or more evocative
of those puzzling creatures our mothers, lovers, wives
& daughters. So here are a few captured moments. |
