Thus what results from my efforts will be a considered contemplation of moments throughout that 'sitting'. Here again I would argue that there are no absolutes. Both artist & sitter's moods can & do change daily, if not more frequently. We both witness different events, in person, on the television, by proxy etc. The weather can change the atmosphere in the studio dramatically hour to hour. All these variables have an impact on the final image.

In painting the model in similar poses, repeatedly, over many weeks & on the same piece of canvas, what I can offer the viewer is an amalgam of my perceptions. I listen to her talking & I dwell upon her words at the same time as I linger over contemplating what her body is signalling to me. The model in question is not in fact my sexual lover, nor am I attempting to represent her individual daily relationship with her husband. To the extent that she has been reflecting upon her own life's experiences & those of her close associates whilst sitting for me means that the pose cannot be 'truthful' & yet that was the assemblage of limbs that I saw in front of me day after day, in those configurations.

There you have it. What I can offer you are my reflections, considerations, perceptions & musings about the issues that concern two individuals in the course of a close relationship. The extent to which the individual reflects the society from which they come or vice versa is open to conjecture because that conclusion is by its very nature the outcome of more, personal perceptions.

My model & I had no fixed agenda when we started this series of paintings 4 years ago. I asked her to start from where Manet had left us all, with 'Olympia', available; but to whom, why & what possibilities lay ahead for their future relationship are the questions we set out to explore in this series of paintings.

I asked my model to make her deliberations in the context of 21st-century English culture. For me 'Olympia' could just as easily be a courtesan, a wife, an inamorato, lover, sister or daughter. The 'absolutes' such as they could be, are that both my model & I are English born & bred & influenced by our native culture.
