I hope that I look with precision yet avoid the formulaic by the very nature of the way I paint with a large variety of palette knives. You might conclude that the very chaotic, free-flowing nature of the application & varied character of the paint, suggests the chaos of inter-human activity, how individuals, ethnic groups & nation states float in & out of contact with each other over time.

My model selected poses over a four-year period, which reflected where she felt 'Olympia's' relationship had developed to at that time. Her sources for the poses were widely drawn from contemporary culture, we tried approximately 160 poses & whittled these down to the 20 images I present here. What I offer you is the story of a relationship. What paths this journey takes, what peaks & troughs, what joys & sorrows, & whether or how it ends are for you & your perceptions to consider.

Diane Arbus once wrote "the human body is really not as beautiful as it?s cracked up to be & when you look at it, the mystery fades away & so does it's 'pin-up' closeness". If you believe that paintings are a means to dwell upon & to challenge the viewer's perceptions about life, or morality, assumptions about other cultures or to question the answers thrust upon us by scientific exploration, then you may wish to linger awhile & contemplate my 'Olympia'.

The truths that I seek to illuminate for your consideration with my illusions & reflections are that through women, ( those western emblems of love & self-sacrifice since Homer ), we perceive the consoling or unsettling truths of life & love in a 21st Century democracy: in which there is no normality, we are each isolated with our fantasies & our sense of apartness
