The sea has long been a passion of mine, I enjoy sailing far off shore, whether as crew on the STS Malcolm Miller or cruising the Western Isles around Scotland & Ireland with friends.

I would like to capture for the viewer something of the enormity & brutal power one witnesses at sea. Most sailors will tell how it draws the spirit inwards where we perceive the consoling/unsettling truths of modern life where there is no normality. Leaving each voyager isolated with our fantasies & our sense of apartness. I hope you will conclude that questions of human nature & the nature of reality are inseparable in these artworks.

Art has to be very strong to embody such ideas in images & so I have chosen to use embedded wood chips in mixed acrylics that make the paintings something tougher, more resolutely realistic. In their sculptural quality & psychological anguish they are unpleasant to touch, cold, hard & uncompromising, just like the sea.

This is my private impressionist quest to trap light & the transient moment on the canvas. A 'Cervantesian' tilt at your responses, away from the cerebral, towards the emotional.
